How to be egg-stra safe in the Kitchen with Fred

With Easter around the corner, you might be wondering which Easter eggs to buy but have you considered buying a home safety kit instead? Did you know that 67,135 children were admitted to hospital in 2020 due to accidents in the home with many parents not installing safety equipment to prevent accidents from occurring?

It is more common for children to be admitted to hospital at times of celebration such as at Easter or Christmas. There are many reasons as to why this might be but with Easter fast approaching here are some things that you should be cautious of in your kitchen all throughout the year.

Things to be cautious of in the kitchen all throughout the year:

1. The hob and stove

On average, 110 children are admitted to hospital per day for burn injuries. It costs the NHS on average £168,155 to treat a severe burn. 70% of all serious burns are to children under the age of 5.

Safety tip: Cook safely throughout the year by using the back burners whenever possible. Turn pot handles away from the edge of the stove to prevent accidental spills. Additionally, create a “no-go” zone around the stove to keep your child safely out of harm’s way.

The Fred Hob and Stove Guard keeps children away from any pans, hot surfaces, and stove controls. The Fred Stove & Hob Guard is suitable for all electric, gas, ceramic, and induction hobs extending from 57 – 90cm. It is reassuringly child-proof with side and front protection which stays cool to the touch. Fred ExtremeHold adhesive has a durable bond – so much so that it can withstand a toddler hanging from it!

2. Choking

With Easter eggs and new toys becoming common in many homes across the UK at this time, it is extremely important to make sure that these items cannot choke a child. Choking is a silent killer. Anything smaller than a 2-pence piece could block a child’s airway leaving them unable to make noise to alert their carer that they are choking. Choking causes the most amount of deaths in 0-5-year-olds in the UK.

Safety tip: Before handing your child any sweets or chocolate, be sure to inspect them for any potential choking hazards. Keep an eye out for age-appropriate treats and always supervise your child whilst they eat.

If you have purchased small chocolate treats for your children, and you are concerned they maybe a choking hazard, we have a simple test you can do The Choke Tester replicates a child’s throat – if the item fits flush inside there is a potential risk. If it doesn’t fit, then a child is unlikely to choke on it.

The Fred Choke Tester comes as part of our 17-piece Fred Home Safety Starter Kit and Fred Home Safety Check Tools. These tools are essential to not only help you understand the potential risks within the home but also can be used to teach your little ones or anyone supervising the dangers to look out for. The Fred Home Safety Check Tools contain one finger probe, one choke tester, and one pack of warning stickers.

3. Medicine and cleaning products

Poisoning is the second highest cause of hospital admissions for 0-5 year olds in the UK. On average, over 100 children aged under 5 will be hospitalised each week due to accidental poisoning. Many household cleaning products, such as washing detergent pods, can look like sweets to young children. However, if ingested these pods can cause chemical burns if the liquid gets into a child’s eyes, nose or mouth.

Safety tip: Invest in childproof drawer locks to keep sharp objects and household cleaning products securely stored away from your child’s reach.

The Fred Adhesive Double Door Lock prevents little ones from entering cupboards and drawers, which may contain these toxic household items. The Double Door Block is designed to hold doors completely closed, eliminating finger traps caused by partial openings. If the cupboard isn’t secure, the red alert tab will appear.

3. Corners

It is not uncommon for children to accidentally bump themselves as they become more mobile. However, it is everyone’s duty to ensure that they can do so in a safe environment. Each day 45 children under the age of five are admitted to the hospital following a serious fall.

Safety tip: Corner protectors can prevent serious injuries from slips and trips.

The Fred Adhesive Corner Protector has shock-absorbing corner guards preventing serious injury from falls and bumped heads.
