Most parents decide to potty train their child when they are between 18 months and 36 months but there is no right or wrong age to potty train, the more important thing to consider is whether your child is ready.
Potty training will be much quicker and easier if you wait until your little one is both physically and mentally ready. This is also true for you as parents, so pick a time that works for you too so that you are relaxed and prepared.
Don’t try to potty train when you and your child are going through any big changes like moving to a new house, having a new baby, starting nursery or if it is a busy time of year like Christmas.
Pick a week when you don’t have any plans, make sure you have everything to hand that you will need and settle down for a week dedicated to potty training your child in a relaxed and comforting environment.
☆ It can be helpful to wait until your child has reached certain milestones before you start to potty train. If your child can walk, sit down, stand up and climb the stairs with ease then you know they will be able to get to the potty or toilet when they need it, but it is also important that they can pull up and down their own pants.
☆ Also watch for signs that your child is interested in going to the toilet and that they are aware when they are going in their nappy. If they follow you to the toilet and ask questions about what you are doing, or if they stop talking or playing when they are filling their nappy then this would suggest that they are getting ready for potty training.
☆ Another important sign to look for is whether your child has a dry nappy for 2-3 hours at a time. This will indicate that they are starting to get better bladder control and will be able to stay dry in-between toilet stops when you start potty training.
☆ If your child has reached most or all these milestones then you are probably ready for potty training, so head down to your nearest Jojo Maman Bebe store to pick up your essential potty-training kit.
