It’s beautiful outside, the temperature is up and summer is well and truly underway! Which means it’s a great time consider weaning baby with fresh, locally sourced summer fruits and vegetables readily available in the supermarkets. Or if you’re a keen gardener, from your very own back garden! Weaning baby during the summer months also means light, fresh meals will go down really well.
Here’s a list of fruits and vegetables in season which are great for weaning baby with as single or mixed ingredient purees, mashed foods or combined within bigger meals:
Not many parents realise ‘cooling’ spices and herbs exist, and are perfectly safe for baby so are excellent for summer weaning.
As you can see there are lots of different tastes that are great for summer weaning, but who says you need to stop there? Why not combine extra flavours (spices and herbs) into your baby’s diet to create lots of yummy, flavoursome meals. Not many parents realise ‘cooling’ spices and herbs exist, and are perfectly safe for baby so are excellent for summer weaning.
Here are some cooling herbs and spices to try within your baby’s meals: Vanilla, mint, fresh coriander leaves, cardamom, dill, cumin.
Try adding some freshly chopped mint to steamed peas and mash together for a sweet and minty treat for your baby. Or try teaming carrot and potato mash with fresh coriander and cumin for a delicious root vegetable pie.
