Safe Sleep Tips
Keeping babies safe while sleeping is of paramount importance. There are a few simple steps that you need to remember when putting your baby to sleep:
- Swaddle your baby safely; swaddling has been linked to the reduction of SIDS. Use the following 3 easy steps to see how to swaddle your baby in the Love To Swaddle Up.
- Swaddle your baby snuggly but not too tightly, the Love To Swaddle Up should be snug around their belly with freedom to move their arms and legs. Please refer to the video for more information.
- Always ensure the neckline of the Love To Swaddle Up fits properly. This means that the fit should be snug around the neck and sit under your baby's chin, without being too loose or too tight.
- Ensure that there are no toys in the cot or loose sheets that babies can accidentally put in their mouth or get tangled in.
- Always put your baby to sleep on his/her back.
- Check the temperature of your nursery and select appropriate layers for extra warm or cool nights. The rule of thumb is to dress your baby as you would dress yourself plus one layer, you can treat the Love To Swaddle Up as the extra-layer.
Please refer to the table on the right for more information about how to dress your baby under the Love To Swaddle Up. We do not advise that you combine the use of the Love To Swaddle Up with a baby sleep bag as this may restrict arm movement and the sleep bag from staying in the correct position. - Place your baby at the bottom of the cot and tuck a top sheet or blanket over them up to their chest, tucking it in snugly under the mattress. Placing them at the bottom of the cot helps prevent baby sliding down under the sheet.
- Most midwives advise that an ideal room temperature is about 18°C.
- Feel your baby's tummy or neck to see if he is getting too hot or too cold and adjust his bedding accordingly. This is easy with the double zips on the Love To Swaddle Up.
- Bring up your baby in a smoke-free home.
- Give your baby access to his hands so he can suck on them to self-soothe and sleep longer.
- Use a firm, flat mattress that fits the cot well, without gaps at the edges. Do not place your baby on a waterbed, sofa, soft mattress, pillow or other soft surface to sleep.
- Check on your baby when he has fallen asleep after crying heavily.
- Discontinue use of the Love To Swaddle Up when your baby has learnt how to roll over.
